The biogeochemical definitions of CDR and secure C-storage that we use (above) require the quantification and linkage of two processes, both of which are complex to measure: the removal of atmospheric carbon dioxide and the subsequent storage of the resulting organic carbon on long time scales (Bach et al., 2021, 2023; Hurd et al., 2022).
